How much does it cost?
The Junior Leagues costs £40, paid as a one-off payment at registration and covers the entire season. If you play all 6 fixtures this works out at under £6 per fixture.
Which league is best for my junior?
The junior leagues is an entry level competition designed for beginners and intermediate juniors that are new to competitions and are ready to make the next step in their development. Club coaches can help with deciding the right league: the Mini League is for younger juniors (under 9) using a larger bouncy ball with relaxed rules; the Red Spot League is for juniors around 8–11 on a bouncier red spot ball; the Yellow Spot League is for juniors around 10–14 with some match play experience, looking to progress to the Hampshire County Closed and England Squash Copper/Bronze events; the Double Yellow Spot League is for juniors 12–17 who compete regularly, ideally with experience in Copper and Bronze events.
Does my junior need to play all 6 fixtures?
No. You can attend as many or as few fixtures as you want. However, it is recommended that at least 4 fixtures are played as final positions are calculated based on the best 4 results out of 6 — missing 2 fixtures will not affect your chances of winning a prize at the end of the season.
Where are the fixtures played?
Fixtures rotate between Winchester Racquets and Fitness, Trojans Squash Club and Lee-on-the-Solent Tennis Squash and Fitness Club. Keep an eye on email updates before each fixture.
When are the fixtures played?
There are 6 fixtures per season, played at regular intervals. Each fixture takes place on a Sunday afternoon, starting between 12pm and 2.30pm, lasting for a maximum of 3 hours. Exact times are communicated on each season's poster and by email before each fixture.
What do I do if my junior cannot make the next fixture?
You will receive an email from hsjuniorleagues@gmail.com before each fixture with a link to a short Google form to sign up. Please fill this in each time to confirm if your junior can or cannot attend — it helps organisers plan the boxes for each fixture.
Who will my junior play on the day?
Juniors are divided into 'boxes' of between 4 and 6 juniors and will normally play each junior in their box in a short match. Boxes are decided based on each junior's seeding, allowing juniors of similar ability to be placed together.
How are matches scored?
Part of a junior squash player's development is learning how to mark matches, so the 2 juniors who have just played normally mark the next match — as they'll experience at England Squash sanctioned tournaments in future. If juniors are unsure or can't agree, they're encouraged to play the point again ('playing a let'). Parents should not worry about the outcome of individual points — it averages out over the course of a season!
